I'm the Commissioning Editor of Tate Collectives, the digital programme for younger audiences at Tate and have just completed a new #InfiniteKusama digital project and commissioned the twitter interactive @thehellocube. I was wondering if there was a way of e-mailing your team to talk about some ideas? Thanks Sarah

Eurostar Presents: Traction - Call for Artwork

An exciting opportunity to create artwork for the London 2012 festival at the new Kings Cross CSM site!

Eurostar (official supporter of the London 2012 Festival) are creating an original one-day summer festival – ‘Eurostar presents Traction’ – curated by internationally renowned DJ Gilles Peterson.  The unique event will bring together music, dance and arts performers from across Europe on the 14th July to celebrate the diversity of European talent on London’s doorstep.

This event will be the very first to take place Granary Square at Central Saint Martin’s new home in Kings Cross and we would like students of Central Saint Martins to help us create an artwork legacy that will become a part of history!

This is a one-off opportunity to let your creativity loose on Granary Square and create artwork that will be the first of its kind in this space and will remain to be seen for years to come. During the event itself we are looking to commission a piece of art that captures the 7 hour show.

The brief is simple, it does not need to be an Olympic or Paralympic themed piece, more an artwork that captures the spirit of this truly unique show in this memorable space.

There will be a budget for materials available and return Eurostar tickets to the continent up for grabs!

Come along to Kings Cross SU Bar (in canteen) on Tuesday 8th May at 5.30pm for a full briefing and to meet the Eurostar team you will be working with on this amazing project.

white-square:

Enter our design competition and have your work to be seen and reviewed by professionals in your field. Not only is this competition an opportunity to say thank you to those who have made a contribution to yours and other’s learning, it should also be a worthwhile experience and a way to increase your visibility.

The judging panel includes University of the Arts alumni who have gone on to enjoy great success in their field. Made up of specialists in both 2 and 3D design they will be able to offer useful feedback about your work.

UAL Alumni on the Judging Panel

Afroditi Krassa (images above) studied at Central St Martins and later at the Royal College of Art under architect Ron Arad. Having worked for some of the world’s largest consultancies, in 2002, Afroditi decided to go it alone and founded Afroditikrassa Ltd. In 2004, she met Julian Metcalfe, one of London’s most innovative entrepreneurs, who invited her to conceive his new “baby” brand. Working obsessively for two months, she came back with a master plan for itsu. When not designing, she teaches design, writes about design, judges design and occasionally dreams of design. From political campaigns to car interiors, her work is always characterised by intellectual rigour, formal directness, visual lightness and wit.

Cheerio!

Hi everyone! I am writing to you as an incoming UAL student from across the pond. My name is Caroline, and I am specifically coming to London from the US to study fashion journalism (via International Preparation for Fashion) at the London College of Fashion. It’s going to be a huge change for me- one that I am greatly looking forward to, but I am also going through a lot of the same emotions andpreparations that I imagine you all are.

I’ll be keeping this blog as away to share my own experiences as I get ready to come to UAL and hopefully touch upon what you are feeling as you too get ready for what are sure to be some of the best times of our lives.

Design us an award and win 400 Pounds

What does good teaching look like?

Calling all students to design awards for the first-ever student-voted teaching award at UAL

SUARTS invites everyone across UAL to express their creativity on the theme of celebrating great teaching.

You can interpret this in whatever way you choose to create a 2 or 3D piece that will be awarded to tutors, technicians and lecturers who enable students to grow in the University’s first ever student-led teaching awards.

We believe that anyone who makes an outstanding impact on students, inspiring them to fulfil their potential should be awarded and we want you to direct how this recognition and pride will look.

Eligibility

The White Square teaching Award competition is open to all University of the Arts students.

Prize

This is more than a conceptual design competition, this is a call for production.

Rather than awarding a simple cash-prize, the winning entries will be awarded a commission to cover their design and production costs. There are two strands to this competition:

  1. 2D pieces such as graphic design, illustration and photographs that can be adapted into multiple editions.

These will be issued to ALL staff who are nominated by their students for going above the call of duty. While it will be issued like a ‘certificate’ this printed item can be a piece of original graphic design, drawing, painting or photograph that YOU think represents great teaching.

2D Design commission: £75

  1. 3D pieces these can be small sculptures or products that will be awarded to the 13 final winners of the teaching awards.

This will be a physical award that will hopefully deck the desks and shelves of UAL’s best teachers. We think this object should be bigger than an apple but smaller than a text book!

3D Design and Production commission prize for this is £400 (awarded in two parts, the first after initial design and the second to cover material and production costs of 13 finished products.

All entries will be fully accredited and displayed on the White Square teaching Award blog and Students’ Union website and may be used for future promotional platforms for the White Square Teaching awards. Winning designs will be awarded to the staff nominated by their students as examples of outstanding teaching. These finished works will also be exhibited in the White Square exhibition which will tour selected UAL campuses later in the Spring.
